Lifting belts help to support your back if you’ve had a back injury or are lifting heavy weights, but why?  It seems that a little leather weight lifting belt wouldn’t make nearly that big of a difference, but ask any power lifter and they’ll tell you that it’s like night and day.  Here’s how weightlifting belts work and how it affects which belts work the best.

Weight belts essentially work by squeezing the contents of your abdominal cavity together.  This increases the pressure in your abdominal cavity, which you normally have to do by contracting your abdominal muscles.  The extra pressure provides more support to the bones and muscles of the lower back and reduces lower back compression.

On top of increasing the pressure in your abdominal cavity, weight lifting belts also limit the lateral and sideways movement of your back.  This means you’re less likely to be injured when your doing a movement.

What does this mean for choosing a belt?  Well, while nylon and other synthetic materials may be more comfortable and have some more technology behind them, leather lifting belts are still the best ones out there in terms of functionality.  They will compress you stomach and keep it there and let your back have the least amount of leeway.

Belts can help you lift heavier, faster

Nylon belts are more comfortable, and better for some beginners because of this and the smaller amount of weight they’re lifting, but they won’t restrict your back’s movement  as much and won’t keep your body as tight.

While belts are great, always remember that they aren’t a substitute for proper lifting form.  Use them properly and they will help build your muscles quick and you lift heavier weights sooner than you thought possible.  However, if you use them all the time or don’t keep good form, you’re lining yourself up for a bigger injury in the future.
